Driving to the airport: United Kingdom
Heathrow and all its terminals lie inside London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), which covers every London borough but not the M25 itself. A car that misses the ULEZ emission standards pays a charge to drive in the zone, and one registered outside the UK has to be registered with Transport for London even if it complies. Scotland has low-emission zones in the centres of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, where a non-compliant vehicle can be fined and there is no option to prepay. At Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh, a charge also applies for using the drop-off zone outside the terminal.
UK traffic keeps to the left. Only a few roads, bridges and tunnels charge tolls; on the motorway network they come down to the M6 Toll and the Dartford Crossing, where the A282 closes the M25 ring across the Thames between Kent and Essex. Dartford has no toll booths: number-plate cameras record each vehicle, and the Dart Charge can be paid by phone, online or at a Payzone shop, in advance or after you cross.
