Driving to the airport: Belgium
Brussels Airport lies in Zaventem, outside the Brussels-Capital Region and so outside the low-emission zone that covers the whole region; the Brussels Ring (R0) is not part of the zone either. Every vehicle entering the region has its number plate scanned by cameras, a foreign vehicle must be registered for the zone unless it is Dutch, and older diesel and petrol cars are kept out unless they buy a day pass or qualify for an exemption. Antwerp and Ghent also have low-emission zones, and access conditions differ from zone to zone.
Tolls matter less. Belgium’s distance-based charge is levied only on goods vehicles over a weight threshold, so cars pay no general road charge; the Liefkenshoek tunnel on the R2 at Antwerp is an exception and charges a toll.
