Driving to the airport: Spain

Spanish tolls are found mainly on the autopistas de peaje, usually signed with the prefix AP, and on Madrid’s radial toll motorways. A toll-free route on ordinary roads always exists. At the booths you generally take a ticket on entry and pay on exit, in cash or by bank card; if you carry an electronic toll tag, check that it is valid in Spain. At Madrid-Barajas, the M-12 leads straight to T4 and is tolled on parts of its length, the tunnel section included.

Larger Spanish towns must set up low-emission zones (zonas de bajas emisiones), and each city writes its own rules, usually based on the DGT environmental label. A car registered abroad cannot get that label, though a German, Austrian, Danish or French emissions sticker counts as its Spanish equivalent. Barcelona also wants foreign cars registered first: its zone, which covers the area inside its ring roads, fines a foreign car that enters unregistered even if it meets the standard.
