Tolls apply on the vast majority of Italian motorways (autostrade). On most of the network you collect a ticket as you join the motorway and pay for the distance driven when you leave it; some stretches, such as the A8 from Milan towards the lakes and the A12 from Rome towards Civitavecchia, charge a fixed toll at a barrier instead. Cash, cards and Telepass are all accepted. If a card payment fails, the barrier may still open and print a slip: it records an unpaid toll and how to settle it, and is not a receipt. In Lombardy, the A36 Pedemontana has no barriers: it charges by number plate or on-board device, and you pay later.

Many historic city centres have ZTLs (zone a traffico limitato), open only to authorised vehicles at set times, and number-plate cameras usually watch their entrances; Rome alone has several. Drive in without a permit and a fine follows by post, hire cars included, and the rental company will usually charge you a fee for passing on your details.
