Driving to the airport: France
Many French motorways (autoroutes) are run by concession companies and charge tolls; those the state runs itself charge none. At a toll plaza, the sign above each lane shows what it accepts: some lanes take cash and cards, some cards only, and télépéage lanes are reserved for drivers with an electronic tag. Some sections, among them the A13 and A14 between Paris and Normandy, use free-flow tolling instead, without a barrier: gantries detect each vehicle and record its number plate. Without a tag, you pay once you have driven through, online with the operator or at a partner tobacconist or newsagent, and an unpaid toll leads to a fine notice.
Crit’Air stickers grade vehicles by their pollutant emissions. The sticker is compulsory in the low-emission zones (ZFE) that some cities run, Greater Paris among them, and whenever a prefect orders differentiated traffic during a pollution episode. Owners of vehicles registered abroad can order one, but only online, and certificat-air.gouv.fr is the sole official site that issues them.
