Driving to the airport: Austria
You need a vignette for any car on an Austrian motorway or expressway, including the A4 and S1 that serve Vienna Airport. The digital vignette is tied to the number plate and sold in the ASFINAG toll shop and app as well as at sales outlets. Bought online, the short-term vignettes can start at once, but the longer ones only become valid after a consumer-protection waiting period; one bought at an outlet is valid straight away. Keep to ASFINAG’s own channels or its authorised outlets when you buy, as fake vignette shops exist.
Some Alpine sections charge a section toll of their own instead, and no vignette is needed between their toll stations: the A9 Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnels, the A10 Tauern and Katschberg tunnels, the A11 Karawanken tunnel, the A13 over the Brenner and the S16 Arlberg tunnel. Pay at the toll station, or buy a digital section toll in advance: it registers your number plate, so the barrier opens without a stop.
